Dharma Study

This fall, we will join an an 8-week practice period with our sister sangha, the Mindfulness Community of Puget Sound in Seattle. This opportunity will connect the Mindfulness Community of Victoria with Sanghas from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Calgary and Mexico City and possibly others.

The practice period will focus on the earliest teachings of the Buddha. Each week, starting October 15th, we will take up another topic which we will explore together in the following ways:

  • Dharma talk by Eileen available on the internet
  • specific practice suggestions and guidelines
  • reading assignment
  • discussion questions to be taken up within our community

Links to the above content will be provided on this page as they become available.

Format

Thursday night sit:

  • Read the reading assignment and discussion questions as a group
  • Dharma sharing will focus on the reading and discussion questions

On your own:

  • Listen to the weekly dharma talk by Eileen
  • Consider incorporating the specific practice suggestions and guidelines into your personal practice

Commitment

The Dharma Study is open to anyone, some members are only attending on Thursday nights while others are doing both Thursday nights and the "on your own" portion. You don't have to attend all the sessions, really this practice is about what works for you.

Dana
Dāna is a Sanskrit and Pali term meaning "generosity" or "giving". It refers to the practice of cultivating unattached and unconditional generosity, giving and letting go. Dana plays an important role in practice because it helps to support our dharma teachers and enables them to continue offering the teachings to us. If you are following the dharma study, it is kindly suggested that a small dana be made to Eileen Kiera.

Topics
We will look at part of the readings and discuss the questions as a group on Thursday night.
Dharma talks are running a little late and will be posted as soon as they are available.
