Gathas
Gathas are designed to make everyday activities an opportunity to return to a state of mindfulness. Gathas are a wonderful part of practice as they help you become attuned to each action of your day. Reciting these poetic verses help us to slow down and enjoy life in the very here and now. The following is just a few examples of gathas, for more gathas please read Present Moment Wonderful Moment by Thich Nhat Hanh
Turning on the Water
Water flows from high mountain sources,
it runs deep within the earth.
Miraculously it comes to us,
and sustains all life.
My heart is filled with gratitude.
Drinking Tea
This cup of tea in my two hands,
mindfulness held perfectly.
My mind and body dwell,
in the very here and now.
Letting Go
Hearing the bell,
I am able to let go of all afflictions.
My heart is calm,
my sorrows ended.
I am no longer bound to anything.
I learn to listen to my suffering
and the suffering of the other person.
When understanding is born in me,
compassion is also born.
Smiling at Your Anger
Breathing in, I know anger makes me ugly,
Breathing out, I do not want to be controlled by anger.
Breathing in, I know I must take care of myself,
Breathing out, I know loving kindness is the only answer.
